Students in third-fifth grade have been learning about what it means to be a good digital citizen. This includes reading the Terms of Service (ToS) of any web tool that they are planning to use. Students learned that websites such as Facebook and Twitter have age requirements to use their services. Talk with your child today about what they learned.

Here at DLES we are always looking for ways to share the various research tools and eBooks we have available. This year we have a new tool called MackinVIA, an online database that contains all of our available eBooks as well as links to various databases. Students can log in by selecting Ducketts Lane in the dropdown menu and then they can use their own username and password if prompted. Take some time to explore this fantastic new tool!
The technology team would like to welcome DLES families back to school. This new year brings about many changes in the way technology classes will be happening and we are excited to be going on this journey with you. Please be sure to turn in your responsible use forms as soon as you can so we can begin working on exciting technology projects together!
Students, do you need something to keep you busy when it is too hot to go out and play? Ask your parents to help you download Type to Learn 4 to your home computer to continue working on your keyboarding skills this summer. Visit the Type to Learn 4 Downloads page and download either the Mac or Windows version. You will need to contact either Mr. Chang or Mrs. Melvin to get the account code. You will also need to know your user name and password from technology class. Have a wonderful summer!! Students in 2nd grade are currently involved in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) unit focused on hand pollinators. The students read a story about a young girl from the Dominican Republic who was having problems with her ohelo flower, a flower from Hawaii that was given to her by a friend. The flower used to produce delicious berries but then stopped for an unknown reason. After some scientific investigation the girl discovered that there were no natural pollinators for her flower in the Dominican Republic so she set about building a hand pollinator.
At this time the students are examining materials that they can use to build their hand pollinators to look at the properties of these materials and to determine which materials will work best. In the next few weeks the students will test these materials and eventually build their very own pollinators. Finally they will test the pollinators and make changes as needed to improve their designs. Be sure to ask your 2nd grader about building hand pollinators! BrainPop and BrainPop Jr. are fantastic websites for students. They provide information on a variety of topics through short video clips, entertaining games, printable materials, and much more. In addition, students can take short quizzes to see what they have learned. One of the main characters for the site, a robot named Moby, is well loved by the students for his antics and humor while the human characters, including Annie and Tim, give age appropriate explanations of the topics being discussed. Please contact the school to get the username and password for our subscription. Happy learning! Students in Kindergarten are learning about fact books. To help the students learn more about these types of books kindergarten classes have spent time in Technology looking at PebbleGo, an online fact book site. The students spent time looking at animals and learning all sorts of new and interesting facts. PebbleGo is available at home so be sure to check it out! For the username and password please contact the school. Happy learning! Last week 5th graders began their STEM unit in technology. The unit, titled Water, Water, Everywhere, takes students through the steps of the engineering design process in order to design and create a water filter. This week in technology the students were learning about contaminants and observing water samples. Next week we will be looking at possible materials to use to create the water filter. Ducketts Lane Elementary has subscriptions to many valuable technology resources including various eBooks and eTools. Please be sure to check out these eBooks and eTools by clicking on the "eBooks and eTools" link under "Web Links." You can also access these links through the main Ducketts Lane Elementary page.
